From the moment I discovered Story Hotel Studio Malmö online, it checked all the right boxes: clean-lined Scandinavian interiors, a prime marina-side location, and that irresistible promise of Nordic summer light stretching endlessly into evening. It felt like the perfect choice for a short design-forward escape. And, in some ways, it was.
Arrival: A Slightly Confused Beginning
The entrance didn’t exactly whisper “boutique hotel.” In fact, it barely whispered “hotel” at all.
It resembled a coworking space—anonymous and quiet—prompting me to double-check if I had, perhaps, walked into a startup by mistake.
Inside, a single desk stood unattended. I hovered, unsure. Moments later, a friendly woman appeared and confirmed I was indeed in the right place. A subtle relief.
Trying to check in, however, led to a surprising twist.
Instead of the usual front-desk welcome, I was politely asked to complete the process on my phone. DIY check-in, even with staff present, felt a touch impersonal—but, in the spirit of tech-forward hospitality, I obliged.
Phone in hand, card out, digits entered—still standing in front of the desk and card reader.
Once completed, I was informed I’d need to swipe the same card again to receive the key. Cue mild frustration: two heavy bags, wallet zipped away, and now an impromptu game of “find the credit card.” Not ideal.
The staff, to their credit, were warm and apologetic, gently noting that the process was “probably an IT issue.” Translation: not how they would have designed it either.
The Room: Design that Dazzles
My room was perched on the 12th floor, offering an expansive view of the marina and horizon beyond.

Here, the hotel delivered everything it promised—and more.
Floor-to-ceiling windows welcomed the golden northern light. A deep blue sea shimmered in the distance.
The interiors were elegant and intentional—brass fixtures, leather accents, minimalist lines softened by thoughtful details.
A well-placed bench framed the view, inviting moments of quiet reflection—or, let’s be honest, a glass of wine at golden hour.

This room was, quite simply, beautiful.
The Details That Didn’t Work
Unfortunately, the bathroom didn’t share the same polish.

The sleek, modern shower overflowed quickly—the drain clearly clogged. Water spilled out, flooding the floor within minutes.

Later, the toilet flush button fell off the wall entirely.
At 2700 SEK per night, one expects a certain standard. Functioning plumbing is generally non-negotiable.
Informed the front desk the next morning. Their response? A 60 SEK smoothie offered as an apology. Refreshing, yes. Equal in value? Let’s say it was symbolic.
Breakfast with a View (and a Side of Guilt)
Breakfast was served on the top floor—once again, the views were spectacular.
I arrived toward the tail end of service and was met with the kind of stern politeness that only hospitality staff can deliver.
“Technically, we’re closed. But… go ahead. I was there at 10.55 I believe, breakfast closed at 11.00 but there were many people still having breakfast at the tables.
I took that as “we’re annoyed with you” and proceeded to gather what was left.
But the tone left a mild aftertaste.
Final Impression: A Hotel with Potential, Not Yet Precision
Story Hotel Malmö has all the elements of a remarkable stay—location, aesthetics, atmosphere.
But luxury isn’t just about beautiful rooms or breathtaking views. It’s about effortless moments. Seamless service. The sense that someone thought of the small things, so you don’t have to.
This stay had glimpses of brilliance, but also too many moments that felt clumsy, disconnected, or overly self-service for a premium price point.
If you come for the view, you’ll get it. If you stay for the experience, be prepared to edit the story as you go.
